Moss Keramik Studio Policies

This following is a list of do’s & don’t for the studio. In order for our studio to be healthy & welcoming to everyone, please read through carefully. Not following studio rules is grounds for revoking your membership. Please be a good clay citizen, so we can focus on getting dirty & having fun!

Cleanliness & Safety:

  • Cleanliness & Safety go hand-in-hand. The biggest health threat in a ceramic studio is airborne silica (aka breathing in clay & glaze dust). The creation of dust is to be avoided at every step of the process.

  • Clean common areas after each use. Clean your wheel, wedging table, work table, tools, & sink after each use. Put tools away in their proper place. Mop the floor around your wheel if there was any spillage.

  • At no time should studio staff be required to clean up after you. Please clean to a standard you would expect to find the studio when you arrive.

  • As far as possible, wet used clay should be returned to the reclaim bag in good condition before you leave. Please allow time to wedge up your own used clay by wedging it on a dry surface, or placing it in front of a fan to re-wedge and return to the supply before you leave.

  • Always clean WET. Sweeping will kick up dust which damages your lungs. Best to clean up clay, glazes, etc before they dry out. Always use a wet sponge to clean up clay, bisque, & glaze dust, and a mop to clean the floor.

  • No dry sanding indoors (wet sand only or go outside).

  • No dry glaze powder (wipe up spills immediately before it dries).

  • Keep glazes off the towels & aprons. Glazes should always be sponged off tools & surfaces, not wiped off with a towel. This prevents toxic glaze dust from getting into our lungs.

  • You must leave 15 minutes at the end of each session for cleaning. Clean all tools, surfaces, equipment, and the floor around your workspace before leaving. Workspaces should be left as clean or cleaner than when you started working.

  • You are required to comply with the studio’s cleaning and waste system for proper disposal of clays & glazes.

  • No touching the kiln (sometimes it is very hot!).

  • You are advised to wear close-toed shoes in the building.

  • You use the studio at your own risk and are aware of the inherent hazards of a studio environment which include but are not limited to use of sharp tools and sharp edges, exposure to toxic materials, the dangers of using materials and equipment at high temperatures, and the risks associate with breathing silica dust.

  • Each member is required to read and follow the health and safety information outlined in these policies and go through a Health and Safety orientation before beginning your Membership.

  • You must comply with the health & safety instructions of staff at all times.

Courtesy & Order

  • Don’t touch other people’s pottery or personal materials.

  • Be aware of how much space you’re taking up. Please store items on your shelf unless you are currently working on them. Manage your sprawl and be aware that we are sharing the space.

  • No smoking is allowed indoors.

Firing

  • Firing fees are covered through purchasing clay from the studio. All additional fees are covered this way. This covers the costs of the clay, studio glazes, delivery of materials, mixing glazes, kiln maintenance & repairs, kiln accessory maintence & replacement, loading & unloading the kiln, processing, weighing, & ticketing, electricity

  • Because of this system, we can only fire work produced with clay purchased from the studio. You can purchase clay in 5kg (20€) or 10kg (40€) blocks.

  • All glaze must be removed from the bottom of your pieces. If the glaze is not fully removed from the bottom of your piece, or applied too thickly, they will not be fired.

  • Clay that is thicker than 2 cm will not be fired.

Visitors

  • Friends & family are welcome to visit the space briefly in a manner that is not disturbing others working.

  • Friends & family who want to work in the studio with you can purchase a Drop-in pass for 20€ per person, per day. You must check in with the Studio Manager and purchase the pass prior to sitting down to work.

  • Drop-ins cost 20€ per day and are only available to friends & family of members & residents, and with special permission. Children are allowed under strict supervision of an adult and so long as they don’t disturb the others working there.

  • Members are responsible for any damage caused by their guests.

Materials

  • We provide basic materials for you. If you bring in outside glazes, please notify a studio manager. We must check and possibly do a test on your piece before putting it into the kilns. You are responsible for any damage your outside materials cause to studio equipment. That said, don’t be afraid to experiment! Just keep Moss Studio staff in the loop, so we can be sure everything is done safely.
